HAECU-HHAI 2024 Tutorial: Human-AI mutual promotion for emotion and cognition understanding (HAECU)

We propose this tutorial at HHAI 2024, aiming to explore the synergistic potential between AI and human understanding of emotion and cognition. It aims to reveal how AI can enhance our understanding of human emotional and cognitive behaviors and how these insights can, in turn, guide the creation of more nuanced AI systems.

We will provide a methodological introduction to how to use the Human-AI mutual promotion for emotion and cognition understanding in different aspects, in the form of a traditional frontal lecture with slides

A final round-table and wrap-up discussion among the participants and organizers will conclude the work of the tutorial about what it means to have a quali-quantitative assessment of using human-AI mutual promotion for emotion and cognition understanding and future research within the HHAI community.

How can AI recognize and understand human emotions and cognitive processes? This involves exploring the capabilities and limitations of current AI technologies, particularly in areas like deep learning and natural language processing, in perceiving and interpreting human emotional states and cognitive patterns, via different cues and modalities, such as macro/micro facial expressions, body languages and other biometric signals.

What impact do human emotions and cognition have on the design and improvement of AI systems? Analyzing how insights from psychology and cognitive science can guide the development of AI systems to better understand and respond to human users’ need.

How can the interaction between humans and AI enhance the understanding of emotions and cognition? Discussing methods and case studies where AI has been used to deepen our understanding of human emotional and cognitive behaviors, and vice versa

What are the challenges and ethical considerations in developing AI that understands human emotions and cognition? Addressing concerns related to privacy, consent, and the potential for misuse of emotionally or cognitively aware AI systems.
